Abstract
Increased need for highly productive and efficient manufacturing systems has been the driving force behind the weaving industry to improve the existing machinery and come-up with improved technologies. Well known manufacturers like Sulzer, Picanol, Toyoda, etc are constantly making efforts to develop weaving machines with enhanced flexibility and speeds. Although strenuous efforts are being made by machinery manufacturers, there have been no significant breakthroughs in the recent past. However, it should be clearly understood that weaving machinery development has not reached a saturation level - efforts should be made by manufacturers to focus their attention in certain areas of weaving such as weaving preparation, online cloth control and monitoring systems, electronic process control etc for further development. In addition, developmental efforts should be directed towards weaving sophisticated fabrics using specialty yarns such as glass, high performance fibres such as Kevlar, Spectra, etc and developing specialty woven structures such as woven molded structures, 3D structures, etc.
