Abstract

In the last couple of decades, new technologies have changed the manufacturing environment dramatically. Computer integrated manufacturing has been and still is in focus, mainly on the premises of the computer. The integration often consists of linking existing company functions together in a coherent information flow without changing the way the functions are performed, the organization etc. This paper discusses these basic issues and outlines some of the research activities that have to be carried out to bring the companies into the next century. The areas outlined are: a function model of a manufacturing enterprise, a study of the mental processes associated with the various function, the human being in manufacturing, computers based tools to support the integration of functions, how to organize functions within a company to support the integrated factory of the future and a new science of manufacturing.
