Abstract
Outlined are some of latest developments and advanced applications of the textile industry. Apparel application, the major end use of textile fibres, is discussed with reference to textile manufacturing machinery and the developments of high performance fabrics. The progression of testing technology is also detailed, focusing on the invention of an artificial human finger to test fabric handle. The importance of genetic engineering in fibre production and finishing processes is outlined highlighting the agricultural research carried out by Cotton Incorporated and the use of enzymatic treatments for textile finishing. Spiders silk, protective applications and intelligent textiles are subsequently dealt with.
