Abstract

The area that is now modern Spain was home to "Las Tres Culturas," Christians, Muslims, and Jews, who coexisted in relative peace for many centuries. Due to extreme persecution promoted by the Inquisition, the Sephardic (Spanish) Jewish culture went underground but was never completely forgotten. This short course will bring to light a bit of this history and the rich collection of music that has survived. Dr. Eric Fried and Professor Roger Landes will also perform some Sephardic melodies on the violin and oud to help bring the memory of this culture to Lubbock and the participants in this OLLI course.
