THE PATHS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO GAINING ADMISSION TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF YOUR CHOICE

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter informs prospective and current graduate students of the protocol of applying to master’s and doctoral programs respectively. It addresses the questions “why graduate school” and “why the pursuit of a graduate education is necessary.” In order to assist students in gaining admission to a program that will be both academically and professionally enriching, the chapter highlights key factors that should be considered when choosing which schools and programs to apply to. It provides tips to prospective students on how to obtain successful letters of recommendation, how to write a thorough statement of purpose, and how to finance graduate school. The quality and reputation of the program (department) is measured by several factors. These factors include the percentage of faculty research and publications; the total number of faculty disaggregated by full, assistant, and associate professors; and the number of doctoral degrees awarded within the department.
