Abstract
The perineum should be washed prior to any internal reproductive procedure in the mare and in preparation for foaling to remove gross debris and to reduce bacterial numbers. The perineum is washed as part of the minimum contamination breeding technique to reduce contamination of the uterus during natural cover or artificial insemination. This chapter outlines the step by step procedure for placement of the tail wrap and washing perineum technique with illustrations, and the equipment and supplies needed. It describes the precautions to be followed while washing the perineum.
