Abstract
An in vitro approach was developed to quantify both the in-surface strains of the anterior mitral valve (MV) leaflet. Focus was on a ∼4 mmX ∼4 mm region of the center portion of the anterior leaflet by tracking the three-dimensional (3D) motions of 16 surface markers. From the resulting marker motions, the complete in-surface strain tensor was computed, along with the corresponding strain rate information. Relations of the principal strain directions to the underlying collagen fiber architecture were quantified, and the relation to other relevant structural and functional aspects detailed.
