Abstract

► Study provides first examination of 2 × 2 achievement goal patterns in a large sample across a number of exercise stages. ► Achievement goal contrasts explored in an exercise context and demonstrated promise for future research. ► The performance-avoidance goal has potential adaptive adherence value in female college aged students. ► Mastery-approach and performance-approach goals were endorsed more in the physically active stages.
