Abstract

We are developing smart utility interfaces for photovoltaic converters. Photo-voltaic converters produce DC power when exposed to the sun. Peak exposure is often correlated with peak electric demand on Utility Power Systems, which are increasingly capacity limited. Therefore it makes sense to supplement generation and shave peak demand by feeding solar power into the utility grid. This requires power electronic converters which need to be synchronized to the utility voltage. In addition, a maximum power tracking capability is needed to extract the optimum amount of power from the photo-voltaic converters under varying sun exposure conditions.
