N2 - A method was developed for the analysis of deuterium in brines containing alkaline-earth salts. The Ca2+ and mg2+ ions in the salt solutions, which interfere in the conventional vacuum distillation method and hence in the deuterium analysis, were removed as insoluble carbonates before azeotropic distillation of the water was performed. The accuracy and precision obtained in the determination of δD in Ca (up to 7.5 m) and Mg solutions (up to 4.7 m), as well as in simulated Dead Sea brines, compares well with the usual accuracy of analysis for these isotopes in fresh water.
