Abstract
In examining sixth-grade students’ written work and listening to interviews of students solving “nth term” or sequence problems from a standardized assessment problem, the importance of the students’ understandings of various mathematical representations became evident. Nth term problems expose students to foundational algebra concepts. Suggestions for classroom instruction are provided.
