Abstract

Cytoplasmic material extracted from sporangiophores of Phycomyces blakesleeanus by either pressure-extrusion or removal with a microsyringe contains substantial amounts of chitin synthetase. Electron microscopy of the samples revealed the presence of typical chitosomes. In samples incubated with substrate and activators, chitin microfibrils associated with fibroids were observed. These results show that structures resembling chitosomes can be extracted from yet another fungus using new procedures.
