Abstract

Preparation of the mare for foaling takes placemonths in advance of the predicted due date and includes planning for a foaling location, administering vaccinations, and reviewing potential foaling complications and developing an emergency plan. Mares are usually bedded on straw for foaling within a large stall. A large stall or small paddock is recommended to allow the mare to easily get up and lie down in preparation for foaling. All bedding should be changed and the area disinfected between foaling mares. The chapter discusses step by step procedure for preparation of the mare for foaling with illustrations and the equipment and supplies needed. It also discusses necessary conditions for the preparation of the mare for foaling,.
