Abstract

In this paper, it is shown that the so-called polygon-circle paradox in the analysis of simply supported plates is not a paradox but a consequence of the alteration of boundary conditions due to a polygonal domain-approximation. Simple ways of avoiding potential problems in the analysis of bending of simply supported curved plates, using a polygonal domain approximation, in the context of the finite element method, are presented and demonstrated to be valid.
