N2 - The validity of the parameter (ΔT)c (which was previously introduced by one of the authors), its meaning, and its calculation, in the analysis of cracked bodies under non-steady creep conditions, are studied. Comparisons are made with the widely used parameter C*, which is valid for steady-state creep. An efficient finite element method for general, small-strain, elastic/viscoplastic analyses is described and the results of an example calculation for a standard compact specimen are presented and discussed.
