Abstract

CAPP has been recognized as an interface between CAD and CAM. To date, most Al-based approaches used in CAPP are some variation of knowledge-based expert systems. However, the knowledge acquisition bottleneck in the implementation of expert systems is yet to be solved. On the other hand, neural networks, characterized by their learning ability, are gaining more and more visibility in manufacturing. This paper discusses the application of neural networks in process planning, examines the strengths and weaknesses of expert systems and neural networks, and introduces a neural-expert hybrid model for knowledge acquisition in process planning.
