Abstract

Network effects and the social dilemmas they engender can leave IT consumers and organizations alike in unenviable position of having few or no choices. In the practical side, the consumers' best hope is that the industry and government will protect consumer interests by establishing standards and enforcing antitrust laws. Companies can best avoid negative outcomes by joining and supporting industry consortia and cooperating with government and consumer groups to create standards and anticipate trends.
