Near-field optical study of AlGaN/GaN quantum-well waveguide

Abstract

The optical properties of AlGaN/GaN quantum-well waveguides were studied using ultraviolet near-field scanning microscopy (NSOM) and near-field spectroscopy. The excitation laser beam was focused onto the waveguide from the top by an ultraviolet refractive objective lens. The optical loss at λ=350 nm was found to be 106 cm -1. The experimentally deduced vertical emission divergence angle was in good agreement with the calculated value using Gaussian beam approximation.
