Abstract

Mutual coupling between transmitter antenna and receiver antenna is an issue in radar and communication systems. A method to reduce the mutual coupling in a transmit-receive (T/R) array is proposed by using E-shaped EBG with T-resonant cavity (TRC-EBG). The T/R array includes a 2x2 patch transmitter array and a 2x2 patch receiver array. A designed periodic TRC-EBG structure was placed between the T/R antennas to reduce the mutual coupling at 6.04 GHz. The simulated results show that the mutual coupling between the T/R antennas was reduced from -35 dB to -66 dB, which is 31 dB isolation improvement compared with the case without the TRC-EBG structure. Moreover, adding the TRC-EBG structure does not affect the radiation patterns of the T/R array.
