Abstract
The objective of this paper is the development of a conceptual model for the duopoly problem which includes in its analysis the profits for the firms as well as the welfare for society. Duopoly models, in which the welfare to society is considered, have become increasingly popular in recent years with studies of mixed duopolies in which a domestic public firm competes against a foreign private firm. But in these kinds of mixed duopoly models the welfare (benefits) for society are only considered in the profits of the domestic public firm. Using a systemic perspective of the competition problem, a new conceptual duopoly model that involves more types of competition (not only the mixed duopolies) and the welfare to society is developed. This systemic perspective includes a classification of competition types based in an isomorphism between duopoly models and symbiotic business relations.
