Abstract
The discovery of large-scale organized motions has brought about a reexamination and, even a redefinition of the fundamental concepts in turbulence. The coherent structures approach has engendered new momentum in turbulence research for significant advances in the understanding, and perhaps modelling, of turbulence phenomena like transports of heat, mass and momentum and aerodynamic noise production. The topological details of the structures, including the spatial distributions of critical dynamical properties of coherent structures, are discussed.
