Material Systems for Sustainable Civil Engineering Design: A Course Syllabus, Delivery and Student Feedback

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

Civil engineers wield enormous influence over the utilization of earth’s natural resources and tomorrow’s engineers must be educated to contribute their part towards a sustainable society. This paper presents an overview of the syllabus, delivery and student feedback from a new course titled “Material Systems for Sustainable Design” after its first semester of teaching. The overarching course objective is to provide students with the knowledge on sustainability and create an awareness of the tools that are both available and needed to apply sustainable material selection practices in their future design work. Each student selected a construction material and developed a sustainability portfolio for it during the semester culminating in a design project for a specific material-application combination. Student responses summarized in this paper indicated that this course was well received by them. The instructor plans to offer this course on a regular basis.
