Abstract
Prior to the beginning of each breeding season, the longevity of spermatozoa should be determined for breeding stallions. Storage may be at room temperature or at cooled semen shipment temperature and may be with or without a semen extender. For practical considerations the longevity testing should be done under the same conditions as those under which the semen would be normally used. Thus for natural cover situations semen should be tested at room temperature without an extender, and for cooled semen transport the semen should be tested with an extender at 5°C (40°F) in a typical shipping container. This chapter discusses the step by step procedure for testing raw semen longevity and cooled extended semen. It outlines the necessary conditions to be followed for the cooled extended semen longevity and raw semen longevity. In addition, the chapter talks about the equipment and supplies needed for the longevity testing of sperm.
