    Abstract

The El Paso Solar Pond recently experienced a complete failure of its XR-5 8130 (SP) liner. In its place a multi-layered clay and plastic-film liner will be installed. This paper will summarize the XR-5 8130 (SP) liner failure analysis and provide preliminary results from laboratory experiments on a clay and plastic-film liner to determine its suitability for use in the new 3350 square meter El Paso Solar Pond. Heat and moisture transport characteristics of the clay-plastic liner will be investigated. An effective thermal conductivity which includes the effect of vapor transport will be investigated experimentally.
