Abstract

Life Cycle Engineering draws more and more research efforts in recent years. The concept is extended from Concurrent Engineering by including the design considerations for entire product/systems life cycle. It is so comprehensive a topic that needs to be clarified. This paper first attempts to outline the fundamental concept of Life Cycle Engineering by clarifying objectives, constraints and evaluation criteria. Then two important types of Life Cycle Engineering researches: life cycle design and life cycle costing are overviewed. Life cycle design addresses not only the functional requirement of a product, but also its manufacturability, serviceability, reliability, recyclability. The costs associated with life cycle performance should be included in the design stage. It is believed that Life Cycle Engineering will play an important role to push U.S. industry back to competitive edge in the world.
