Abstract

The synthesis, structures and spectroscopic properties of M(MeOCH 2 CH 2 OMe 2 Si) 3 C–BH 3 (M-1-BH 3 ) and M(MeOCH 2 CH 2 OMe 2 Si) 3 Si–BH 3 (M-2-BH 3 ) (M = Li, Na, K) derived from reactions of BH 3 with the alkali metal zwitterions [M(MeOCH 2 CH 2 OMe 2 Si) 3 C] (M-1) and [M(MeOCH 2 CH 2 OMe 2 Si) 3 Si] (M-2) (M = Li, Na, K), resp., are reported. X-ray analysis and DFT calculations reveal discrete zwitterionic structures with the octahedral alkali metal cations rigidly locked and charge separated from the BH 3 units via pendant donors groups. Solution experiments with the hydride acceptors B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 and [Ph 3 C] 2 [B 12 C 12 ] indicate that Na-1-BH 3 can donate hydrides to form cations of formula [Na(MeOCH 2 CH 2 OMe 2 Si) 3 C–BH 2 ] + .
