Abstract
Science, technical, and risk communicators implicitly or explicitly appeal to the public’s common sense when they shape information for the public’s decision-making. This chapter argues for a more complex understanding of common sense and how it should be accounted for in a crisis like COVID-19. The learning objective of this chapter is to better understand how technical communication theorizes common sense and how technical communication should integrate appeals to common sense into their communication design.
