Accurate knowledge of bone properties is important for the design of materials, implants, and design of machines to assist the body. The effect of storing these bones while testing and prior to testing is also vital. Degradation of properties due to storing methods leads to incorrect numbers and false conclusions. The aim of this study was to determine if ethanol (a common storage media) had any effects on the fracture toughness of bovine cortical bone over extended storage periods. Overall, 109 samples of bovine cortical bone of the same orientation were manufactured. These specimens were split into three different groups by separating medial, lateral, and posterior. Randomly selected specimens of each group were selected for testing at the end of each week. The study of the effects of storing specimens in ethanol for up to nine weeks was conducted. It was concluded that the influence of storing bovine cortical bone in ethanol for up to nine weeks is reversible, or that the original fracture toughness is maintained.
