The influence of solid insulators upon flashover voltage and the temporal and spatial predischarge development was investigated using a model arrangement in a coaxial test vessel. Due to the design of the test arrangement and the preconditioning, triple-junction-effects as well as severe contamination could be excluded. The luminous phenomena during predischarge development at the spacer surface were recorded with a sensitive high-speed image recording system and compared with the development in the gas gap. Parameters were gas pressure, polarity of the dc test voltage and spacer material.
