Abstract
Introduced by Motorola in the 1980's, Six Sigma quality improvement programs have been extensively adopted in American businesses, and Six Sigma has spread to organizations in the United Kingdom, Europe, and other global regions. Despite its wide application in Western manufacturing organizations, Six Sigma received little academic attention until about 2000. Since then, academic researchers have sought to establish theoretical foundations for Six Sigma and extend the body of knowledge regarding Six Sigma programs. The objective of this study is to extend the body of knowledge regarding the application of common industrial engineering tools as they relate to the completion of Six Sigma projects in a custom manufacturing environment. This paper presents the results of an examination of industrial engineering tool use in Six Sigma projects for a contractor providing specialty manufacturing and service activities for a United States federal government agency.
