Abstract
The multiresolution filtering technique is developed and applied to smooth image segmentation. The technique is based on approximations of a signal by some orthonormal wavelet basis at various resolutions. It is shown that the filter is close to being shift invariant and linear in phase according to an index on wavelets and also capable of suppressing local quadratic variations due to small bumps or noise by going to coarser approximations. An image segmentation scheme is proposed based on the technique. It has been tested on a variety of real images.
