Higher-order acoustic-paramagnetic-resonance transitions of magnetic impurities in dielectrics

Abstract

A detailed theory for the acoustic magnetic resonance of paramagnetic ions in a dielectric at frequencies ω=m ω0 is derived, where ω0 is the splitting between adjacent energy levels of the paramagnetic ions and m=3, 4, or some larger integer. The theory involves the calculation of the acoustic absorption at these higher frequencies due to a collective mode of the strongly coupled spin-phonon system. A comparison of this theory with the observations of Bolef et al. for the system MgO:Fe2+ shows remarkable agreement with experiment.
