Hanging in the balance

This mathematical inquiry uses a simple physical balance scale to assist students in concretely exploring foundational number concepts. Students are encouraged to make connections from their explorations on the balance scale to numerical and symbolic representations. These representations form the basis of algebraic equations and expressions and are used in other advanced mathematics concepts.
