The Barrie Examiner:

"Violinst's musicianship thrills Barrie audience"

Posted By MARILYN REESOR

The Colours of Music welcomed concert violinist John Gilbert at Burton Avenue United Church on Monday afternoon, accompanied by pianist William David.

Gilbert's well-rounded program opened with the Partita for Solo Violin No. 3 in E major by J. S. Bach, poised and fluent, and closed with the Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano in D minor by Johannes Brahms, executed with dramatic flourish and passion.

However, the highlight of the performance was Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor by Belgian composer Eugene Ysaye. This sonata for unaccompanied violin is seen by the world's greatest violinists of the last century as a test of skill and virtuosity. Both instrument and artist are laid bare to the intense scrutiny of an expectant crowd, and Gilbert did not disappoint.

In a majestic display of tonal and technical precision and musicianship, he absolutely thrilled his audience.
