Abstract

Ideally a foaling attendant should be present during stage 2 of labor when the fetus is expelled. Several commercial devices are available which are designed to warn the attendant that parturition is imminent. These range from positional switches on halters or girth straps to devices attached to the labia of the vulva. The labia transmitter devices span the vulvar opening. When the foal passes through the vulva, the labia separate and the transmitter is activated. The vulvar transmitter device is generally attached 1-2 weeks prior to the anticipated foaling date. The device may also be used to monitor pregnant mares with precocious mammary development and possible premature foaling. This chapter discusses step by step procedure for monitoring the pregnant mares by using the vulvar device. It lists equipments and supplies needed to monitor the pregnant mares.
