Abstract

This Chapter gives an overview of the basic requirements and design considerations of an FMCW radar system for short-range micro-motion sensing. At the beginning of the chapter, fundamentals of CW radar systems are introduced and the advantages of FMCW radar are discussed. For an FMCW radar system used in short-range micro-motion sensing applications, the design principles and considerations are discussed in detail from system to component levels. Advanced beamforming techniques for FMCW radar systems, including phased array, radio frequency (RF) beamforming, and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) are detailed, in addition to basic and advanced radar signal processing methods. Actual radar measurement data are presented.
