Modern cotton fiber production is focused on providing an industrial raw material for spinning mills. These mills require a raw material that performs reliably and facilitates their production goals. This chapter provides an introduction to the integral role cotton fiber quality research plays in producing and developing cotton fiber for use as an industrial raw material. Natural variation in the cotton fiber structure and microstructure is introduced in terms of its impact on fiber quality. Natural variation in cotton quality impacts the performance of cotton fiber in an industrial setting. High-Volume Instrument (HVI) classification is commonly used to market cotton to spinning mills. HVI measurement methodologies are provided alongside the most common HVI fiber quality parameters. Many other fiber quality measurement instruments are available, each providing a unique characterization of the natural variability in cotton fiber quality. The measurement methodology of many of these instruments is described alongside some of the most common fiber quality parameters each instrument provides. Cotton fiber is a natural industrial raw material, thus, cotton fiber quality assessment must be understood in terms of the target market. The two dominant markets for cotton fiber-ring spinning and rotor spinning-are characterized in terms of the manufacturing method and the importance of cotton fiber quality in the finished product. Finally, the spun cotton yarn is used to produce either woven or knit textiles. These technologies are introduced along with the chemistry of textile finishing.
