Fetotomy

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Fetotomy involves the dissection of the fetus inside the mare's reproductive tract. The mare's reproductive tract mucosa may become irritated, edematous, and/or ulcerated from repetitive movements and continuous exposure to the fetotomy instruments and veterinarian's arm. A fetotomy should only be performed on a dead fetus. If the fetus is alive, other methods of delivery such as cesarean section should be considered. This chapter provides a description of various instruments and the processes involved in fetotomy. Information on specific fetotomy cuts is also provided. With a skilled clinician performing the fetotomy and a minimum number of cuts and manipulations, fertility after fetotomy should not decrease significantly.
