Epididymal Sperm Recovery

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Spermatozoa can be recovered from a stallion that sustains a catastrophic injury, colic, or other life-threatening medical condition. In most instances, spermatozoa will survive and maintain capacity for fertilization for 12-24 hours after the stallion's death. However, it is recommended that sperm be harvested and cryopreserved as soon as possible following death, euthanasia, or elective castration of a stallion. This chapter discusses the step by step procedure for recovery of the epididymal sperm, and harvesting epididymal sperm with illustrations. It lists the equipment and supplies needed for recovery of the epididymal sperm. The chapter also discusses alternative seminal plasma processing, and the necessary conditions to be followed during the recovery of the epididymal sperm.
