The impetus for this trio was to make a piece in which the dancers stayed physically connected to each other throughout. This is what the trio of women does for the first half of the piece, set to Bach’s Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 6 in D major.
I began the process of making this work while concurrently choreographing the musical “Curtains” at Texas Tech University. In one scene of this musical comedy, three women become trapped in a canoe, waiting for someone to save them. While comedic in the musical, it is actually quite a dire situation when really considered. Suddenly, my trio of connected women looked just like the three women in that canoe, hopelessly drifting across vast oceans. They cling to each other, but struggle to maintain composure, and hope for a shred of evidence that they will be saved. Through contemporary balletic movement, they each confront their despair, eventually returning to the security of each other as they continue to float away, their bond unbroken, their spirits at peace.
