The day after the storms, which generated approximately 100 tornadoes in eleven states throughout central U.S.A. and part of Canada, architects and engineers from various organisations initiated a coordinated effort to document the extent and severity of damage. Field work conducted by these engineers was coordinateed with meteorologists. The ground level documentation effort by the engineers was begun under the auspices of the National Research Council Committee on Natural Disasters . Observations made by these engineers are presented in this report and cover windspeeds, meteorology, storm characteristics, structural response and an analysis of school buildings.
