N2 - In this paper, the subject of path-invariant contour integrals that quantify the rate of energy release at a crack-tip, propagating under mixed-mode, unsteady conditions, with a nonconstant velocity, is critically examined. Such an integral, over a space-fixed contour is newly introduced, and its utility in computing mixed-mode stress-intensity factors for propagating cracks, using finite element methods, is demonstrated.
