Abstract
A microcomputer-based image-processing system which is extremely valuable in fundus image analysis has been developed, with specific image enhancement capabilities comparable to existing large-scale digital image processing systems. Direct fundus imaging, standardization of background illumination and transformation of coordinates can also be incorporated for evaluation of fundus photographs acquired over a long period of time. Menu-driven software allows review of the steps applied, creating a feedback mechanism for optimum display of the fundus image. The potential of the fundus image processing system for quantitative and detailed assessment of textural changes in fundus photographs of glaucoma suspects is discussed.
