Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the best current sustainability practices in the hotel industry and compare their best practices with those in the retailing industry. The question for hoteliers is no longer “should we develop a sustainability strategy?” but “how do we implement a sustainability or green strategy?” Governments, citizens, and competitors are forcing the issue to top of the strategic and tactical agendas of all major hoteliers and retailers throughout the world. Each industry has developed sustainability strategies, many of those are similar; however, the implementation may be diverse.
Eleven general managers (GMs) in international chain hotels participated in this research study by responding to open-ended questions related to their current experience in sustainability practices.
