Abstract

Many previous studies have been conducted to study galloping of slender structural components. While some recently studies have investigated the problem of galloping with coupling between vibrations of the principal axes, few occurrences of coupled galloping have been reported. This paper reports an experimental study of coupled galloping of a slender tower with distinct natural frequencies along its principal axes. Through both full-scale and wind tunnel experiments, the characteristics of the coupled galloping as well as their correlation with the wind characteristics are investigated, and the aerodynamic damping that causes the coupled galloping is evaluated.
