The constraint release model for the diffusion of polymer chains of mass M into a matrix of chains of mass P is examined in the self diffusion limit, i. e. M equals P. It is found that the model does not reproduce the observed (reptating) behavior that the isothermal self diffusion coefficient varies as the inverse square of the molecular weight and it is suggested that the constraint release model for diffusion should be re-evaluated. Effects of the variation of T//g with molecular weight on the isothermal self diffusion coefficient are also discussed.
