Abstract
This paper presents a brief summary of the recent and current work of the authors in the following selective areas: (I) dynamic fracture mechanics and (II) three-dimensional crack problems. The following topics are addressed: (1) a moving singular element procedure which gives highly accurate solutions to elastodynamic problems of fast crack propagation in finite bodies; (2) numerical simulation of dynamic crack propagation and arrest in various fracture specimens using the above analysis procedure; and (3) path-independent integrals that characterize the severity of the tip of an elastodynamically propagating crack.
