Collisional deactivation of highly vibrationally excited molecules. Dynamics of the collision event

Abstract

Classical trajectories are used to study microscopic details of collisions between argon atoms and highly excited methane molecules. Plots of orbital angular momentum, methane rotational angular momentum, and methane vibrational-rotational energy during the course of a collision reveal strong couplings between the Ar + CH4 relative degrees of freedom and the CH4 vibrational-rotational motion.
