Abstract

This article examines the popular dramaturgy of the Romantic period that included canines and quadrupeds in staged drama. Theatre provided a particular contact zone of animal-human interaction. Transformed from objects to living beings, Romantic-period animals of the stage literally demonstrate early nineteenth-century transformations in human/animal rapport.
