Burns Mantle and the American Theatregoing Public

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

Theatre critic and editor Burns Mantle, best known today as the founder of the Best Plays Series, which he edited from 1920 to 1947, wrote intermittently about audiences. His on-the-ground, non-scholarly observations are, in the aggregate, useful tools for thinking about present-day audiences and for recognizing the confusing terms that are too often allowed to slip by unremarked when discussing (the) playgoing public(s).
